Examination of age-specific cases in Florida shows that the state is experiencing a surge of Covid-19 cases in children. Also, despite the high levels of vaccination in older age groups in Florida, the current number of cases (many of which are the Delta variant) are about equal to the winter wave of SARS-CoV-2 when vaccination was just beginning and very few were fully vaccinated.
It is important to take a closer look at the age specific data on cases in Florida. Florida has made it more difficult to examine their data, since they moved to weekly reporting and discontinued access to line data, which previously could be downloaded. Look at the blue lines in graphs 1 and 2-- daily number of cases by age group, and compare current values to where Florida was during the winter wave. FL had a winter peak during the first week of Jan. 2021. Florida did not provide case data for kids under age 12. Older kids and younger adults have higher numbers of cases now compared with the winter wave. It is surprising to note that even for older age groups (50-59, 60-64 and 65+), the number of cases during this delta wave is on par with the winter wave -- and that is despite relatively high vaccination rates in those older age groups.
